What we do and how you can help

A lot of pet animals in Singapore suffer unnecessarily because of ignorance on part of their owners. Many people buy pets on impulse and do not fully appreciate the responsibilities of keeping an animal at home. The problem is particularly acute for rabbits because people wrongly assume that they are low-maintenance starter pets.

HRSS was established by a group of concerned volunteers to address this problem. We seek to reduce the number of unwanted rabbits in Singapore and improve rabbits' lives through education.

HRSS runs a fostering programme to rescue and re-home abandoned rabbits. Every rescued rabbit is spayed or neutered, receives individual care including toys, medical care, healthy food and treats, and lots of love.

HRSS participates in numerous public events and maintains this website to educate the general public about rabbit care and behaviour. Our popular schools' programme serves to impart the young with the right attitude in treating and caring for animals.

HRSS has been operating as a registered society since April 2002. We are also a certified educator for the American House Rabbit Society. HRSS works closely with other animal welfare groups in Singapore such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Cat Welfare Society and Action for Singapore Dogs.

 Why we are special

Mission

We seek to reduce the number of unwanted rabbits and improve rabbits' lives through education.

Philosophy

1. The House Rabbit Society of Singapore (HRSS) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organisation dedicated to rabbit welfare and awareness in Singapore.

2. HRSS believes that ALL rabbits are valuable as individuals, regardless of breed purity, temperament, state of health, or relationship with humans. The welfare of all rabbits is our primary consideration.

3. It is in the best interest of domestic rabbits to be neutered/spayed, to live in human housing where supervision and protection are provided, and to be treated for illnesses by qualified veterinarians.

4. Domestic rabbits are companion animals and should be offered at least the same individual rights, level of care, and opportunity for longevity as commonly offered to dogs and cats who live as human companions.

5. Rabbits are intelligent, social animals that require mental stimulation, toys, exercise, environmental activity, and social interaction.

6. Domestic rabbits are not the product of natural selection, but rather of human interference by means of breeding programs. Domestic rabbits are human-dependent animals that need protection and it is therefore a human responsibility that these animals be cared for in a manner which meets their needs.

7. HRSS does not support or align itself with any group or individual promoting rabbits as food or lab animals.

8. HRSS does not support commercial or exploitative interests. Nor do we endorse products. Donations from sponsors may be gratefully accepted, but no obligation is implied. Objective recommendations of products are occasionally made for health reasons but never in exchange for payment or publicity.

9. HRSS respects the privacy of its members. Our mailing list is not shared by other organizations or commercial interests.

Make A Donation

We at the HRSS owe our success to our volunteers, and to the generosity of individual donors and corporate sponsors who support our work.

We would immediately cease functioning without our volunteers, who without pay and who despite other commitments, put many hours into educational and awareness work. Equally important are our donors who support us financially. Because HRSS receives no government support or advertising dollars, we count on your generosity to keep our programs alive.

How Your Donations are Used

Rabbit Rescue & Rehoming
The primary purpose of HRSS is to rescue and foster homeless rabbits, which means that the largest portion of membership contributions and other donations goes to our fostering program.

On average, HRSS spends about $200 on every fostered rabbit. Food and veterinary care comprise large amounts of fostering expenses. Although our veterinarians are generous with their discounts, our volume adds up. All rabbits who come through our doors are spayed or neutered, and any physical problems are treated.

HRSS does far more than gathering abandoned rabbits. We also take the responsibility of finding a new home for our rabbits. All our volunteers are reimbursed for expenses incurred in rehoming rabbits. While the overhead costs for running HRSS are low, we do still need to purchase basic items like computer equipment, paper, office supplies, and postage.

Education
Education is very important because it helps reduce the number of abandoned rabbits who need to be rescued, and it improves the quality of life for the ones in permanent homes. The aim here is to educate people sufficiently so that fewer rabbits will be abandoned, and fewer will need to be rescued. Helping people understand their rabbits' behaviour and solve problems that might cause them to relinquish their rabbits is how education saves lives. The second part of our education program is to help our conscientious members, who cherish their animals and want to keep them happy and healthy for as many years as possible.

Our education program includes mailing printed educational material to individuals and presenting slides, videos, flipcharts and handouts to groups of people, especially children (link to school talks). It also includes printing and mailing our quarterly newsletter, and the maintenance of this website.
