 Why we are special

Sheila Wee has been a professional storyteller since 1999 and has been described as a Godmother of Singapore Storytelling. She co-founded Singapore’s first storytelling circle; its first professional storytelling company, and was instrumental in the development of the Asian Congress of Storytellers. Sheila was a founding executive committee member of the Storytelling Association (Singapore) and is its current Vice President (2009/2010) Sheila runs her own storytelling company; Storywise  (www.storywise.com.sg)

Sheila loves telling stories to adults and children alike. She is comfortable telling to a crowd of over a thousand, but she particularly enjoys the chance for an intimate gathering of children or adults, where the power of story can truly be revealed. Sheila’s multicultural repertoire includes Singaporean myths and legends, Asian and Western folktales and lively participation and prop stories.

In Singapore Sheila has taught numerous storytelling courses and workshops for adults, both independently and in conjunction with organisations such as the National Book Development Council (Singapore), the Ministry of Education (Singapore) and the Storytelling Association (Singapore). In addition, through her work under the National Arts Council’s Arts Education Programme, Sheila has taught storytelling to hundreds of primary and secondary school students. As well as teaching storytelling skills to all age groups , Sheila conducts adult workshops on the applied use of storytelling

In her international work,  Sheila  has performed at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, the Australian National Storytelling Festival, the Skye and Lochalsh Storytelling Festival and at various schools and community venues throughout the UK. Sheila has also onducted workshops for the Society for Storytelling (UK), the Australian National Storytelling Festival and for the Longman’s Storytelling Conference in Hong Kong.

Sheila can customise a storytelling performance programme to suit the needs of any client or venue.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT SHEILA'S STORYTELLING

"Sheila Wee has done amazing work in the propagation of storytelling arts in Singapore.   Sheila tells beautifully and elegantly.   With her large repertoire, she easily pleases both adults and children.”

Dr Margaret Read MacDonald, Storyteller , Author , Folklorist , Seattle USA. www.margaretreadmacdonald.com

"Sheila is a captivating storyteller whose warmth, humour and conviction delight both children and adults alike. She captures perfectly  the wit, wisdom and magic of the many traditional m and modern tales in here repertoire."

Anne O'Sullivan, Library Teacher, Tanglin Trust School, Singapore

"Your stories were very nice, very captivating. I was really lost in the world of your stories. Your gestures and different tones of voice helped a lot in the telling of the stories and it was disappointing that the session was only that short. I don't think I will ever get tired of listening to your stories! Hope you will come and visit us again. I'm inspired by you to try storytelling; it all seems so fun now!"

Secondary Two Student, Nanyang Girls High School, Singapore

“Sheila Wee is as comfortable vividly retelling a historical tale of Malaysia as she is weaving magic from an English fairy tale. Her mixed cultural background, with a foot in both Britain and Singapore, along with a passion for research, gives a depth and richness to her work. Sheila uses her background in drama to add just the right touches of characterization, imagery, and gesture to her work as an elegant and talented storyteller - sensitive to audience and story alike.”

Cathy Spagnoli,Storyteller, Author,Vashon Island, Washington State,USA.  www.cathyspagnoli.com

"In 2003 I participated in the International Showcase of Asian Stories held at the Esplanade in Singapore with Sheila Wee.  Sheila is one of the best storytellers I have seen.  Her style of telling is a delight to children and adults alike. I am looking forward to her coming to Australia soon to weave her magic."

Christine Greenough, Australian Storyteller "The Talespinners"

“Sheila Wee is a wonderful storyteller who shares her heart in her stories. Her inimitable style keeps her audience of children or adults either sitting on the edge of their seats or happy laughter. I was fortunate to hear Sheila perform at the special ‘Storytellers concert’ in the beautiful new theatre complex in Singapore in November 2003, and also at The Asian Congress of Storytellers in 2002 and 2003.”

John Hockney,Storyteller, NSW, Australia

“When I was attending the Storyteller’s showcase that was part of the Asian Congress of Storytellers in Singapore this last November (2005), I was really impressed by the talents of the local storytellers. Sheila Wee’s tale of “Tattercoats” was a traditional story that seemed to blend the themes of “King Lear” with the “Cinderella” fairytale. What impressed me most with Sheila’s telling was the intensity with which she became involved in the story. It was not so much through her gestures, that she used well to add emphasis to the story, but through the power and gravity she gave to the words themselves that made this story seem so strong and poignant. “
